It really eludes words. I've never seen a transcription of this song. This song is also widely available in live versions, particularly on the Royal Albert Hall double CD. That version is considerably changed and is reliant on Jason's lead guitars; as such, this transcription applies only really to the studio version. _Effects:_ Flangers and phasers are preferable here folks, and a good echochamber can't hurt either (to duplicate the live version you need distortion as well)... _Tuning:_ This song is played in standard tuning. Miscellaneous Tablature Oh Happy Day In 1997-1998, Jason frequently covered an old gospel tune called "Oh Happy Day", which was written by someone named Dodderidge and is available on EMI records (as stated on the sleeve of Royal Albert Hall). The chords are rather simple. Intro: Arpeggio C chord C F Oh happy day C F Oh happy day Dm G When Jesus walked Dm G Oh, when Jesus walked Dm G Oh and when he walked C He washed my sins away Repeat this once with F and C filling in the space between. Then proceed into the chorus with C and F, then Dm and G. The voicing is pretty and simple. Transparent Radiation (transcribed by a_spaceman) _Notes:_ This is a cover of an old Red Krayola song. It is one of the best such covers the Spacemen 3 recorded on what is arguably their best album. Lovely song. This version (which is essentially the most widely known version) is also called "Transparent Radiation (Flashback)". Anyway... I've never seen a transcription of this song before (or of ANY Spacemen 3 songs whatsoever for that matter), which is surprising because once you get past its somewhat awkward preference for certain chord constructions, it's actually very simple. _Effects:_ Try a good phaser pedal. Since this was really written for an organ I believe the effect of a long, pure tone is one which a phaser or a good flanger can provide. Fiddle around with delays on these. _Tuning:_ Tune this down slightly. In fact, it works best on a mildly out-of-tune guitar. But not a whole (or even half) step. Aside from that it's basically standard EADGBe (standard) tuning. I'm not sure which version this song is simply because the Taang! CD does not correctly give a track length (the sleeve reads 11:26, but it's less than half that). It was apparently written by MC5 but the lyric is by Sun Ra (I can't hear any lyric on this version though, save for what amounts to some heavily echo-laden, strung-out burbling by Sonic at its inception). So I guess you could say this is an Sp3 cover of the Mc5 cover. :-) I don't have the Threebie 3 EP so I doubt this version of the song is the same. I've never seen a transcription of this song. Surprising since it's a fairly "well-known" (at least the Mc5 version is) song amongst music fans, although from what I've heard the Spacemen 3 interpretations are quite different. The frequency of its fifth chords make it easy to begin a transcription but mildly difficult to complete. _Effects:_ Good distortion pedals, anything generic. The cheaper the pedal, the dirtier (and in this case, better) the song sounds and therefore the more Mc5-esque way of playing would be no pedals at all but with guitars and amps up to 12. :-) _Tuning:_ This song is played in standard tuning. (EADGBe) Define chords: E - 022100 E3 - 0221XX E5 - 022XXX G3 - 3554XX G5 - 355XXX A5 - 577XXX This song is played in 4/4. The strumming pattern is quite simple. The song starts out made of up bars which can be constructed with 1 quarter note and 1 dotted half note. Then, later, in the "chaotic" portion with howlin' solos courtesy of J Spaceman, the chords are strummed with normal, 4 quarter note frequency. In the rhythm section below I've shown the drumbeat sitting below the chords strummed so you can play it easily. As this is an instrumental a good knowledge of the song won't hurt either :-) Ok: The song begins with howls of feedback (stand parallel to your amp and fiddle with the guitar's tone controls)...to cause that jagged, propulsive effect that fades the feedback out, rapidly switch pickups whilst turning the volume down and up (this is a two-hand exercise and as a result you can't play an notes like this which is alright because there is no melody as of yet)... This song initially appeared on the Revolution 12" LP and CD (the 7" pressing only has Revolution and Che as a b-side), but later turned up when Taang! remastered and re-issued Playing With Fire. The Carter Family version is transcribed in some detail in the rest of the archive, (actually it's one of the earliest files in OLGA - submitted in 1992 by someone named Steve Putz from the Xerox PARC!) but I felt it was important to tab out Jason's version for Spacemen 3 fans. It's interesting to note that the Spacemen 3 version is, for the most part, the Carter Family version in the key of F. Anyone else find it strange that the only transcriptions of Spacemen 3 stuff I've been able to do has been their covers? ;) _Effects:_ Hmm...I'm sure there's something on there...you can try pretty much everything you want...phasers are always prefereable... _Tuning:_ Tune this down slightly.
